What’s In Store for You at Caribou Coffee

The different variants of Caribou Coffee are as colorful as its beginning. And all the whipped cream and milk that comes with every cup of Caribou Coffee are as wild as its early stage of operation.

Caribou Coffee was started in 1992 by newlyweds John and Kim Puckett while exploring the Denali National Park in Alaska. They decided to build a gourmet coffee company (perhaps thinking of competing with Starbucks, which at that time had only a little over a hundred stores). The couple raised the funds and built their first gourmet coffee company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They called it Caribou Coffee (Caribou is a wild reindeer that lives in the Arctic and Subarctic parts of North America).

Unfortunately, just 3 years after the foundation, the wild reindeer turned into a coffee shop (hoped to be tamed in the Metro) became so problematic particularly on the company’s operations. This badly hurt Caribou Coffee as the company was only able to open 40 additional outlets in the next 2 years from their already existing 50 stores.

This called for a revamp on the organization positions where the founding members were replaced by Don Dempsey from Mc Donald’s as the chairman and chief executive.

However, the growing question on the ability of the company to exist in itself became very dominant in 2000. As an action, the company had decided to sell 70% of their stake to Crescent Capital of Atlanta. The 70% later became 87.8%.

The Crescent Capital is under the First Islamic Investment Bank of Bahrain.

This action made a little positive effect on the status of the company but significant effect was seen on the construction of several Caribou Coffee stores they were able to build.

Caribou Coffee today is considered the second largest operator of non-franchised coffeehouses in the country, next to Starbucks. It has to 322 individual stores located in 12 states and Washington, D.C.

Caribou Coffee headquarters is in the Minneapolis Minnesota, and employs over 4000 people.
